What you can safely check: verify the backset measurement with a tape measure, confirm the door thickness at 1-3/8 or 1-3/4 inches, and inspect whether the strike plate has simply loosened, which a screwdriver can address. What goes wrong in DIY Schlage installs: the tailpiece is cut to the wrong length for your door thickness, causing intermittent failure that appears months later; the cylinder set screw is overtightened and strips the housing; or the strike plate is misaligned by 1/8 inch, which accelerates wear on the bolt mechanism and voids the manufacturer’s warranty.
