Signs Your Schlage Master Key System Is Failing
- Grand master key opens a lock it should not. This is the classic master key system failure: a master pin has sheared or worn to a depth that creates an accidental shear line. We find this most often in properties near The Alameda where heavy foot traffic means high cycle counts. The fix is cylinder repinning, not replacement.
- Change key works intermittently or requires jiggling. Driver springs lose tension over time, especially in south-facing doors where San Jose summer heat cycles the metal. The key lifts pins to the wrong height because spring pressure is inconsistent. We replace springs and repin.
- Key extraction requires force or the key sticks at 90 degrees. Worn pin chambers develop burrs that catch the key. In master-keyed cylinders this is more common because the additional pin stacks create more friction surfaces. We hone the chamber or replace the plug.
- Newly cut keys fail where originals still work. The original key was cut on a worn duplicator that rounded the bitting. - Control key will not remove the interchangeable core. The control lug has worn or the core housing has distorted from overtightened retaining screws. This is a hardware failure, not a keying issue, and we replace the core or housing depending on what we find.
