Signs Your Kwikset Deadbolt Installation Is Failing

• The key rotates but the bolt doesn’t move. This usually means the tailpiece has sheared or slipped out of the cam slot. In Kwikset 660 units, the zinc tailpiece fatigues after roughly 8-12 years of daily use, faster in San Jose’s dry climate where dust infiltration accelerates wear.
• The thumb turn spins freely in both directions. The interior cam has cracked or the set screw has backed out. On SmartKey models, this can also indicate the rekey cradle has failed internally, a repair that requires full cylinder replacement.
