Mul-T-Lock Lock Rekeying: The San Jose Owner’s Guide
Mul-T-Lock lock rekeying in San Jose typically runs $45-$85 per cylinder for standard Interactive and Classic Pro series, with high-security MT5+ cylinders at $75-$120, all quoted in writing before we start. We stock Mul-T-Lock pinning kits, key blanks, and cylinder cores on every van, and most residential rekeys in Willow Glen, Rose Garden, and downtown San Jose are completed same day. Most owners discover they need a rekey after a move, a lost key, or a tenant change, when they realize their Mul-T-Lock keyway cannot be duplicated at a hardware store and the cylinder needs professional repinning to render old keys useless.
Which Mul-T-Lock Models This Applies To
Mul-T-Lock cylinders fall into three main series we service in San Jose, and identifying yours takes about thirty seconds once you know where to look.
Interactive: The most common residential cylinder in San Jose homes built 2010-2020. Look for the cloverleaf logo and “Interactive” stamped on the key head. Uses a telescopic pin system with inner and outer pins. Rekeying requires Mul-T-Lock’s proprietary pinning kit; standard Schlage or Kwikset pins will not seat correctly and will jam the cylinder.
Classic Pro: Older but still widely found in commercial buildings along The Alameda and in Almaden Valley estates. Keyway is slightly wider than Interactive. The Classic Pro accepts the same pinning kit as Interactive in most cases, but the driver springs are longer. Mixing spring lengths between series causes binding within six months of rekeying.
MT5+: The flagship high-security cylinder with the alpha spring sidebar mechanism. Keys have a moving element near the bow. Rekeying an MT5+ requires the MT5+ specific pinning kit plus sidebar springs. We carry both on our San Jose vans. Aftermarket pinning kits exist for Interactive and Classic Pro, but for MT5+ we use OEM Mul-T-Lock pins exclusively. The tolerances on the alpha spring channel are too tight for generic equivalents, and we’ve seen aftermarket sidebar springs fail at the 18-month mark in San Jose’s dry summer heat.
To identify your series without disassembling anything: check the key stamp, then the face of the cylinder for a small engraved model code. If the code starts with “I” or “INT,” it’s Interactive. “CP” or “CLP” is Classic Pro. “MT5” is self-explanatory. When in doubt, text us a photo of the key and cylinder face. We’ll tell you before we dispatch.
Novak Lock & Security San Jose is an independent service provider. We are not affiliated with Mul-T-Lock USA, though we are factory-authorized to service their products and stock genuine Mul-T-Lock key blanks and pinning components.
Signs Your Mul-T-Lock Lock Rekeying Is Failing

- The key turns, but the bolt doesn’t retract fully. This usually means the cylinder’s tailpiece has worn or the cam alignment has shifted after repeated rekeys. In San Jose’s older Craftsman homes near Naglee Park, we see this when original Mul-T-Lock cylinders have been rekeyed three or four times without replacing the tailpiece washer.
- The key sticks at the 10 o’clock or 2 o’clock position and requires jiggling. One or more pins have developed a burr, or debris has entered the keyway. Mul-T-Lock’s telescopic pin design is more tolerant of dust than standard cylinders, but the inner pin channels can still clog with construction grit, especially in homes near ongoing development in North San Jose.
- The key works in some locks but not others on the same property. This indicates a master key system with inconsistent pinning across cylinders, or a cylinder that was rekeyed with incorrect top pins. The Interactive series is particularly sensitive to master pin height; a .003″ variance will cause intermittent failure.
- You can remove the key while the lock is unlocked. The cam has worn past its stop point, or the cylinder was reassembled with the wrong retaining clip after a previous rekey. This is a security gap, not just a nuisance. An extracted key in the unlocked position means anyone can turn the thumbturn or interior lever.
- The keyway feels gritty, and you’ve already tried graphite. Graphite lubricant is the wrong choice for Mul-T-Lock cylinders. It accumulates in the telescopic pin channels and hardens, particularly in San Jose’s low-humidity climate. What feels like a lubrication problem is often a contamination problem requiring cylinder disassembly and cleaning.
Replacement Cost & What’s Included
| Service | Price Range | What’s Included |
|---|---|---|
| Interactive / Classic Pro rekey (per cylinder) | $45 - $85 | Disassembly, pin replacement, 2 new keys, function test, photo record |
| MT5+ rekey (per cylinder) | $75 - $120 | Disassembly, OEM pin and sidebar spring replacement, 2 new keys, function test, photo record |
| Master key system rekey (per cylinder) | $65 - $110 | Master pin calculation, pinning to new master, 1 change key + 1 master key, function test |
| Cylinder removal and reinstallation (if required) | $25 - $40 | Removal from door hardware, rekey, reinstallation with proper cam alignment |
The range depends on cylinder accessibility, whether the cylinder is captive in a mortise body, and whether we need to decode a lost key situation. Every rekey includes a documented photo record of the cylinder condition before and after, plus a written scope stating the pin heights used. Haven Standard Clause 1 applies: the price quoted on the phone is the price on the invoice. No dispatch fee, no “service charge” added at the door. The 365-Day Done Right Promise covers the rekey against mechanical failure or keying error.
DIY or Call Us?

Here’s what you can safely check yourself, and where it ends.
Safe to check: Confirm your series from the key stamp. Verify you have all existing keys. Test every lock with every key to identify which cylinders actually need rekeying. Count your cylinders and note whether they’re in knobs, deadbolts, or mortise bodies. This information gets you an accurate phone quote.
Not safe to attempt: Disassembling a Mul-T-Lock cylinder without a pinning kit, follower tool, and proper workspace. The telescopic pins are under spring pressure and will launch across the room. The inner pins are .003″ tolerance; installing them backwards or mixing Interactive and Classic Pro pins causes immediate jamming. MT5+ cylinders contain the alpha spring sidebar, a pre-loaded component that can unwind violently if the retaining pin is removed incorrectly. We’ve been called to San Jose homes where a DIY rekey attempt destroyed a $180 MT5+ cylinder that would have cost $75 to rekey professionally.
We carry Mul-T-Lock pinning kits, key blanks, and replacement sidebar springs on every van. Most rekeys in San Jose are completed in twenty to forty minutes on site. Call (669) 201-7095 with your series and cylinder count, and we’ll quote the exact price before anyone drives.
FAQs
A properly rekeyed Mul-T-Lock cylinder lasts 10-15 years under normal residential use in San Jose’s climate. The limiting factor is usually physical key wear, not pin wear. We use nickel-silver bottom pins and phosphor-bronze springs, which resist the galling that shortens lifespan in cheaper cylinders. If you’re rekeying because of a lost key rather than wear, the new pinning will outlast the original. Call (669) 201-7095 if you want us to assess whether your cylinder has enough service life left to justify rekeying versus replacement.
Repair and rekeying are separate operations. Rekeying changes the combination so old keys no longer work. Repair fixes mechanical damage: broken springs, worn cams, cracked cylinder housings. A cylinder with a broken spring can be repaired and rekeyed in the same visit. A cracked housing cannot be repaired and requires cylinder replacement. We inspect every cylinder before rekeying and tell you if repair is needed. The inspection is included in the quoted rekey price. Call (669) 201-7095 to schedule.
Most single-cylinder rekeys take 20-30 minutes on site. A full home rekey of four to six cylinders typically runs 60-90 minutes. MT5+ cylinders add 10-15 minutes per unit due to the sidebar mechanism. We work by appointment for rekeying, not emergency dispatch, so you choose the window. Same-day availability is common in San Jose. Call (669) 201-7095 to book.
We stock Mul-T-Lock Interactive and Classic Pro pinning kits, key blanks, and common springs on every van. MT5+ sidebar springs and pinning kits are stocked on our San Jose vans specifically, not just at the shop. We do not need to order for standard rekeying. The only delay would be an unusual keyway variant or a discontinued Classic series that requires special-order blanks. In those cases, we tell you before we dispatch. Call (669) 201-7095 with your key code and we’ll confirm stock in sixty seconds.
The name on the van is the name on the invoice. That is the whole arrangement.
