Mul-T-Lock Car Key Cutting: The San Jose Owner’s Guide
Mul-T-Lock car key cutting in San Jose typically runs $45-$85 per key for standard high-security automotive blanks, and $95-$165 for transponder or proximity keys that require programming. We stock Mul-T-Lock MT5+ and Interactive+ automotive blanks on our vans and can cut and program most same-day. Most San Jose owners discover their Mul-T-Lock key is failing when the dimple cuts begin to hang in the ignition or door cylinder, or when the key bow cracks at the stress point where the transponder pod meets the blade.
Which Mul-T-Lock Models This Applies To
Mul-T-Lock uses a dimple-key platform, not the standard American edge-cut pattern, so identification starts with the key face. Look for the vertical pin dimples on both flat surfaces and the interactive element (a moving pin inside the key itself) on MT5+ and Interactive+ series. The bow shape tells the rest: the rounded “teardrop” bow with the blue or black insert is Interactive+, while the angular bow with the yellow insert and side-pin window is MT5+.
Automotive applications we cut for in San Jose include the Mul-T-Lock vehicle lock kits installed on fleet vans, aftermarket high-security ignition retrofits, and the integrated door-ignition systems common on Sprinter and Transit vans upfitted for contractor use. The blank spec matters: MT5+ automotive blanks use a 2.5mm dimple spacing with a 3.0mm blade width, while Interactive+ uses 2.2mm spacing. A standard Mul-T-Lock residential blank will not engage an automotive cylinder, even if the bow looks similar. We carry both OEM Mul-T-Lock blanks and the Ilco and JMA aftermarket equivalents that meet the same DIN 18252 tolerances. For transponder applications, we use OEM pods; aftermarket transponder housings have a higher failure rate in the heat cycling that San Jose dashboards see from May through October.
Signs Your Mul-T-Lock Car Key Cutting Is Failing

- The key sticks or requires jiggling in the cylinder. Dimple cuts wear asymmetrically because most drivers insert the key with the same orientation every time. The leading edge of each dimple rounds over first, and the interactive pin (if present) no longer aligns cleanly with the sidebar.
- The bow cracks or flexes at the transponder junction. Mul-T-Lock transponder keys use a polycarbonate bow with a metal blade pressed in. After five to seven years of San Jose heat and the leverage of a keyring, that press-fit loosens. Once the blade wobbles, the transponder coil fractures internally and the immobilizer stops reading.
- The remote functions but the key will not turn. This usually means the mechanical blade is intact but the interactive element is seized with debris or corrosion. Fleet vehicles near the Bay or in industrial zones see this more often from salt air and metal dust.
- You need to pull the key out slightly to get it to turn. The tip of the blade has worn or the shoulder stop has compressed. Either way, the key is no longer seating at the correct depth, and continuing to use it will damage the cylinder pins.
- A duplicate already feels worse than the original. Most hardware stores copy Mul-T-Lock keys on standard duplicators that trace the worn original. The copy is a copy of a worn key, and the interactive pin depth may be off by 0.1mm, enough to cause intermittent failure.
Replacement Cost & What’s Included
Standard Mul-T-Lock automotive key cutting in San Jose: $45-$65 for a non-transponder Interactive+ or MT5+ blank, cut and tested in your lock. Transponder or proximity keys with programming: $95-$165, depending on whether the vehicle uses a fixed-code or rolling-code immobilizer protocol. Fleet accounts with multiple identical keys receive a per-key discount quoted in writing before we start.
What drives the range: transponder chip generation (Philips Crypto 2 vs. Texas Instruments DST+), whether we are cloning an existing key or generating from the vehicle immobilizer data, and whether the original key is present for code extraction or we are working from the lock cylinder impression. Every quote includes the blank, the cut, the programming, and two test cycles in your presence. Haven Standard Clause 1 applies: the price on the phone is the price on the invoice. The 365-Day Done Right Promise covers the cut accuracy and the transponder function. We leave you with the written scope and the documented photo record of the key profile and bitting code for your files.
DIY or Call Us?

There is no safe DIY for transponder Mul-T-Lock keys. The blade cut requires a dimple duplicator with angular feed (not the standard key machine at the hardware store), and the transponder programming requires a scan tool with the correct immobilizer seed-key access. Attempting to program without the right tool can lock the immobilizer module, which is a dealer or specialist recovery at that point.
What you can check: confirm the key model from the bow markings, note whether the failure is mechanical or electronic, and bring any spare keys you have. If the original key is intact enough to read, we can extract the bitting code and cut a factory-fresh duplicate without disassembling your lock. If you are down to one key, that is the time to call. We carry the full Mul-T-Lock automotive blank series, the transponder pods, and the programming hardware on our San Jose vans. The name on the van is the name on the invoice. That is the whole arrangement.
FAQs
In San Jose’s climate, a daily-use Mul-T-Lock automotive key lasts seven to twelve years before the bow or blade shows wear. Heat accelerates the polycarbonate fatigue, and keys left on dashboards through summer afternoons fail faster at the transponder joint. Call (669) 201-7095 for an exact quote on a fresh cut - estimates are free.
Blade wear cannot be reversed; the dimple geometry is precise to 0.05mm. A cracked bow can sometimes be transferred to a new blade if the transponder coil is intact, but the labor exceeds the cost of a new key in most cases. We will tell you honestly which path costs less when you call (669) 201-7095.
Non-transponder keys: fifteen minutes on-site. Transponder or proximity keys: thirty to fifty minutes, including immobilizer pairing and function testing in your presence. Same-day service is standard in San Jose and surrounding areas.
Yes. We carry Interactive+, MT5+, and the transponder pod housings for both series, plus the JMA and Ilco aftermarket equivalents that meet spec. If your application uses a discontinued Mul-T-Lock automotive cylinder, we will identify the retrofit path and quote it in writing before ordering. Call (669) 201-7095 to confirm stock for your specific model.
