Abloy Lock Rekeying: The San Jose Owner’s Guide

Abloy lock rekeying in San Jose typically runs $45-$85 per cylinder for standard profiles and $95-$165 for high-security Protec2 and Exec cylinders, with same-day service available when you call before 2 p.m. We stock Abloy-compatible pin kits, sidebar components, and key blanks on every van, so most rekeys are completed in a single visit without ordering delays. Most San Jose owners discover their Abloy lock needs rekeying after a move, a lost key, or a tenant turnover - or when the key starts catching in the cylinder and they realize no hardware store in the area can cut a replacement.

Which Abloy Models This Applies To

Abloy has manufactured several distinct cylinder platforms, and the rekeying approach differs for each. The Classic and Profile lines use a disc-detainer mechanism with rotating discs rather than pins; these require specialized tools and cannot be rekeyed with standard pin kits. The Protec2 and Exec series add a moving sidebar that engages with a sidebar code on the key, creating a second layer of security that also complicates rekeying. We see the most Protec2 cylinders in San Jose on commercial entries in the North San Jose tech corridor and on high-end residential gates in Almaden Valley.

To identify your cylinder, check the face for stamped markings: “ABLOY CLASSIC,” “PROFIL,” “PROTEC,” or “EXEC.” The key bow shape also tells the story - Protec2 keys have a distinctive rounded shoulder with a dimple track on both edges. If your lock was installed before 2000, it is likely Classic or Profile; post-2010 residential installs in San Jose are predominantly Protec2. We carry OEM Abloy pinning kits for Protec2 and Exec, and quality aftermarket equivalents for Classic and Profile where OEM supply has grown intermittent. The aftermarket discs for Classic are dimensionally identical but lack the hardened steel core of OEM discs; for a lock exposed to San Jose’s coastal humidity and the occasional fog-driven corrosion cycle, we typically recommend OEM.

Signs Your Abloy Lock Rekeying Is Failing

Signs Your Abloy Lock Rekeying Is Failing
  • Key rotates but does not retract the bolt. In disc-detainer Abloy cylinders, this usually means one or more discs has worn a flat spot or the sidebar has lost spring tension. The key aligns the discs correctly, but the sidebar cannot drop into the gate to allow rotation of the plug. We find this most often in Classic cylinders that have cycled 50,000+ times.
  • Key inserts roughly or requires jiggling. Dirt and oxide accumulate between the discs in San Jose’s variable humidity, especially near the bay where salt air penetrates exterior hardware. The discs no longer sit flush in their neutral position, so the key must force them into alignment. Cleaning helps temporarily; rekeying with new discs solves it.
  • New keys work, but old keys still operate the lock. This indicates a partial rekey or a master-keyed system where the change key combination was not fully stripped. Abloy master systems use multiple sidebar codes, and an incomplete rekey leaves one level active. We strip all disc combinations and rebuild from the factory code card.
  • Key turns 360 degrees without stopping. The cam or tailpiece has sheared or the retaining clip has failed. On Abloy mortise cylinders, the cam is a separate brass component that wears against the lock body; when it rounds off, the cylinder spins freely. This is mechanical failure, not a rekeying issue, but we diagnose it during the same visit.
  • Key works in warm weather, binds in cold. Metal expansion differential between the brass disc chamber and the steel sidebar causes interference below 45°F. San Jose rarely hits this, but early morning in the hills above Silver Creek or during a rare cold snap, the lock becomes temperamental. Rekeying with properly dimensioned discs and a lubricated sidebar eliminates the tolerance stack.

Replacement Cost & What’s Included

Service Price Range What’s Included
Abloy Classic / Profile rekey $45-$65 Disc set, new keys (2), sidebar inspection, written record
Abloy Protec2 / Exec rekey $95-$165 OEM disc pack, sidebar components, key blanks (2), code card update
Additional keys $18-$35 each Cut to factory spec, verified in lock before departure
After-hours / emergency rekey Add $45 Same scope, dispatched within 45 minutes

The range for Protec2 reflects key blank availability. Abloy controls key blank distribution tightly; some older Exec keyways require a special order with a 48-hour turnaround. We stock the twelve most common Protec2 keyways used in San Jose commercial installs and can rekey those same-day. Every rekey includes a new code card registered to your address - without it, no locksmith can cut a replacement key, not even us. Haven Standard Clause 1 applies: the price we quote on the phone is the price on the invoice. No dispatch fee, no “service charge” added at the door.

DIY or Call Us?

Abloy cylinders are not designed for field disassembly by owners. The disc-detainer mechanism uses a series of rotating discs with precise angular positioning; without a disc-detainer decoding tool and a pinning kit calibrated to 0.1mm increments, you cannot determine the existing combination or set a new one. Worse, the sidebar springs are under compression and will launch across the room if the cylinder is opened without a spring retainer. We have found incomplete DIY attempts in San Jose garages where the owner managed to remove the cylinder but scattered the disc pack across the workbench, losing the factory combination entirely. Recovery requires drilling the lock and replacing the cylinder - a $280-$420 proposition versus a $95 rekey.

What you can safely check: confirm the keyway type from markings, count how many keys you need, and photograph the cylinder face for us before you call. That is usually enough for a firm quote. What we handle: disassembly, disc inspection for wear, sidebar spring replacement if indicated, new key generation, and the documented photo record left with you at completion. Call (669) 201-7095 and we will quote the exact number before anyone drives to you.
