Abloy Car Key Cutting: The San Jose Owner’s Guide

Abloy car key cutting in San Jose typically runs $95-$185 per key depending on the keyway series and whether the original code card is available, and we complete most cuts same-day at our shop or mobile in Santa Clara County. We stock Abloy Protec2, Classic, and Sento key blanks on the van, and we cut to factory spec using code-series data, not trace duplication, which preserves the lock’s anti-pick properties. Most San Jose owners discover their Abloy car key is failing when the key begins to stick in the ignition or door cylinder, or when a valet copy no longer retracts the sidebar cleanly.

Which Abloy Models This Applies To

Abloy automotive keys fall into three distinct families, and the blank, the cutting machine, and the pricing all change depending on which one you have. The Protec2 series uses a rotating disc mechanism with a curved keyway; the Classic line uses the older half-moon profile; and the Sento sits between them with a stepped keyway that looks similar to Protec but uses different spacing. You can identify your series by the bow shape and the stamped code: Protec2 bows are rounded with a dimpled grip, Classic bows are flatter with the Abloy triangle logo, and Sento carries a two-letter prefix before the key number.

We carry OEM Abloy blanks for all three series, plus a quality aftermarket option for Classic keys that meets the same brass alloy spec but costs roughly 30% less. The aftermarket blank is not available for Protec2; the disc geometry is too precise. If your key code card is missing, we can decode the lock cylinder on-site in most San Jose parking locations, though that adds 15-20 minutes and moves the price toward the top of the range. Daniel Novak has decoded Abloy cylinders since the Protec2 launch in the early 2000s, and we keep the full Finnish factory code book updated quarterly.

Signs Your Abloy Car Key Cutting Is Failing

Signs Your Abloy Car Key Cutting Is Failing
  • The key sticks or requires jiggling to turn. This usually means the key’s angled cuts have worn down from repeated insertion against the disc detainers, or the brass has deformed slightly from heat cycling in a San Jose parking lot. A fresh cut from the factory code, not a worn-key trace, fixes it permanently.
  • The key turns but does not retract the sidebar fully. The sidebar is the metal bar that physically blocks the lock housing; if the key’s depth cuts are even slightly off, the discs don’t align to release it. This is common after a hardware-store duplication that used standard equipment instead of an Abloy-specific machine.
  • You feel grinding or hear clicking inside the cylinder. The discs are brass and relatively soft; a mis-cut key scrapes the edges and leaves brass shavings that accelerate wear. We find this most often on vehicles parked near the coast in Half Moon Bay or Pacifica, where salt air already stresses the mechanism.
  • The valet key works but the master does not. Abloy valet keys are cut to a restricted subset of the disc positions. If the master fails while the valet operates normally, the master has likely been recut incorrectly or the deepest cuts have worn past tolerance.
  • The remote head separates from the metal blade. On Abloy integrated remote keys, the plastic housing is ultrasonically welded and not designed to be reattached. We cut the new blade and transfer the electronics in-house, or pair a new OEM shell if the circuit board is damaged.

Replacement Cost & What’s Included

Here is how Abloy car key cutting prices break down for San Jose customers:

Service Price Range
Standard Abloy Classic cut to code (code card present) $95-$125
Abloy Protec2 cut to code (code card present) $145-$185
Decode and cut (no code card available) $165-$220
Integrated remote key: blade cut + electronics transfer $195-$275
Additional duplicate at same visit $65-$95

The range reflects keyway complexity and whether we are cutting from a known code or decoding the cylinder. Every price is quoted in writing before we start, per Haven Standard Clause 1: the price on the phone is the price on the invoice. That is the whole arrangement. Labor, the blank, and a test-fit in your lock are all included. We warranty the cut for 365 days; if the key does not operate smoothly, we recut or replace it at no charge.

DIY or Call Us?

DIY or Call Us?

There is no safe DIY path for Abloy key cutting. The disc-detainer mechanism requires angular cuts measured in degrees, not the depth-based milling used on standard pin-tumbler keys. A standard key duplicator will destroy the geometry and can jam the lock. If you have the original code card, photograph it and email it ahead; we can confirm the series and have the blank ready when you arrive. If the card is lost, we decode on-site with scope and pick tools designed for disc detainers. Novak Lock & Security San Jose is an independent service provider, not affiliated with Abloy, and we have no incentive to sell you a lock you do not need. Call (669) 201-7095 and we will tell you whether a cut, a decode, or a full cylinder replacement is the honest next step.
