• Thumbturn spins freely in both directions without resistance. The internal cam has stripped, usually from repeated over-torquing. In San Jose’s older Willow Glen cottages with settling frames, owners often force the thumbturn against a misaligned strike plate until the cam fails.

DIY or Call Us?

An owner can safely check two things: whether the strike plate screws are tight, and whether the bolt slides freely with the door held open. If either reveals the problem, the fix may be a screwdriver and five minutes. Everything else, we recommend against. Removing a Mul-T-Lock cylinder requires a specific cam orientation to avoid dropping the telescopic pin stacks; reinstalling it with the tailpiece misaligned will lock the mechanism completely and can damage the housing. The deadbolt mechanism itself contains a spring-loaded bolt under tension, and improper reassembly can send components into the door cavity.
