Signs Your Schlage Lock Rekeying Is Failing
- Key works in some positions but not others. This indicates a driver pin or spring has dropped into the plug, usually from wear on the retaining cap after repeated rekeying. The plug binds at the shear line and the key will seat fully only when the chambers align by chance.
- Two different keys both operate the lock. This is the classic “ghost key” symptom: master pins have worn to a height where an unintended key combination lifts the stack to shear. It is common in San Jose’s older Almaden Valley homes where original Schlage hardware has been rekeyed three or more times without replacing worn master pins.
- Key extraction requires jiggling or excessive force. The bottom pins have developed flat spots or burrs from key insertion wear, or the plug has accumulated brass dust from the hard water minerals that accelerate corrosion in this region. The cylinder needs repinning and the chambers need cleaning.
- Lock was rekeyed recently but now behaves inconsistently. A previous rekey used standard .003 increment pins instead of Schlage-spec .005 increments, or the wrong spring lengths were installed - too weak a spring allows pin float; too strong causes premature key wear. We see this after handyman rekeys in the Rose Garden area.
- Key turns but bolt does not retract fully. This is often misdiagnosed as a bolt problem when it is actually the tailpiece alignment. On Schlage B-series deadbolts, the tailpiece has a specific clocking for right-hand versus left-hand doors; if a cylinder was swapped between doors without reclocking, the tailpiece binds before full throw.

DIY or Call Us?
A homeowner can safely verify the Schlage model number and count the cylinders needed - check the edge of each door for the stamped series identifier. What goes wrong with DIY rekeying is not the pinning itself, which is mechanically simple, but the tolerance stack: a plug reinstalled with slight misalignment, a spring compressed to the wrong preload, or a master pin height miscalculated by one increment. These errors do not show immediately. They show three weeks later, when the new key starts sticking or a neighbor’s key suddenly works.
Schlage cylinders contain small springs under light compression. They will not cause injury, but they will launch across a kitchen table and into carpet, leaving the lock inoperable until a replacement spring set arrives. We carry those springs. Most vans do not.
